Jesus Gil Manzano will handle his first ever Champions League group match on Wednesday when he takes control of the Anderlecht v Celtic match.
The 33-year-old took charge of three Europa League group matches last season plus the round of 32 clash between Borussia Monchengladbach and Fiorentina.
Manzano is in his fourth season handling international fixtures and has clearly been highlighted and fast tracked through the system by the Spanish FA and UEFA.
Although both teams will deny it Wednesday’s clash is effectively a Europa League play-off with Bayern Munich and Paris Saint Germain certain to occupy the top spots in Group B.
With both teams losing their opening match Wednesday’s meeting and the Matchday Six clash at Celtic Park seem certain to determine who will finish third and go into the Europa League after Christmas.
While Celtic are five points clear at the top of the SPFL Anderlecht are toiling on the domestic front with caretaker boss Nicolas Frutos expected to take charge for the last time when he faces up to Brendan Rodgers’ side.
